Hungarian Lessons

Since it's the summertime and we don't have school, Justin and I are spending more time learning Hungarian. It's a very interesting language. There really isn't any language that it is like. Here is Zsuzsa, our Hungarian teacher. She's absolutley wonderful and amazingly patient!

There are LOTS of prefixes and suffixes that you can add to a word and change its meaning. Here are examples:
(I don't know how to add special characters yet, so the accents are to the right of the letter to which it belongs.)

jo' = good
jobb= better
a legjobb= best

ka've'= coffee
ka've'fo"zo"= coffee maker
hosszuka've'= long coffee
(By the way, American coffee is VERY weak compared to Hungarian coffee.)

bara't= friend
bara'tno"m= girlfriend or friend that is a girl
bara'taink= our friends

And I found out the Hungarian saying about flowers and my translation was not entirely correct:

Aki a vira'got szereti, rossz ember nem lehet.

One who likes flowers, it's not possible to be a bad person.

Good for you! How long will you be learning for? You leave soon. I think it is great you are studying...

We've been learning since 2003, about twice a week. We should probably be better at speaking Hungarian than we are, but we're trying!
